According to a report filed by Amanda Khoza on News24 R3.7 million ,yes you read that correctly, is set to be spent on both the T.I. and Nicki Minaj concerts set to be held in Durban. Political parties have questioned the eye watering figure and the benefit it will provide to the city. The DA’s Zwakele Mncwango has since challenged the expenditure. The DA member had this to say:
“They are willing to spend R3.7m on international artists when we face water restrictions. How will Nicki Minaj benefit Durban?”
Local Hip Hop artists have long decried the fact that the South African government is all too willing to spend money on international acts but resistant to fund, grow and support Local artists. South Africa is currently facing a major economic crisis and is on the verge of a downgrade from international ratings agencies. Some feel that this money could’ve been better spent on developing the local entertainment scene and provide much needed investment in the entertainment sector and the South African economy as a whole. With the rise of a host of talented Durban based Hip Hop artists the move by the municipality is even more baffling.
