Say Hello to KLY(@KLYofficial) a KZN born and Midrand raised African superstar in the making. KLY, which stands for “Keep Love Young”, is a 22 year old singer/songwriter with a distinct Hiphop edge. Apart from having immense vocal ability and range, the young artist is also a talented dancer who was one of the official dancers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was also once a member of the internationally known Krump dance crew “300cru”.
His music is laced with tales of heartbreak, love lost and passionate dalliances, as such his sound is varied and versatile. Take for instance his single, “Real Mjita” where he brags about himself, his crew and lifestyle with all the swagger expected from a rapper and contrast this with another one of his songs titled “Soul Touch” where he speaks on having a bond so strong with a woman that he describes their trysts as more than just a physical connection but rather the act of their souls touching. It’s no wonder he credits the equally versatile, Nigerian superstar, Wizkid as his favorite African Musician. His talents are on full display on the single titled “Lights On” where he effortlessly glides on the Wichi1080 produced instrumental with the ease and elegance of an industry veteran.
However, the question will be asked as to why an RnB artist would be featured on a Hiphop website. This question is valid but fails to take into account a number of factors. Although the singer’s music is steeped in romanticism it’s also heavily grounded in reality. KLY’s music is both fresh and innovative and talks to the experience of a young generation of millennials trying to find themselves in an ever changing world while still trying (and often failing) to find love. The RnB artist is certainly living his truth and what’s more Hiphop than that?
The RnB crooner is currently adding the finishing touches to his upcoming project titled “KLYmax” due for release sometime in June 2016. With cosigns from African Music Industry heavyweights such as South African Producer, DJ Maphorisa and the internationally acclaimed producer Brian Soko (Producer of Beyoncé’s global hit Drunk In Love) the young musician is certainly going places. KLY is an exciting, young artist who is sure to make waves both in the African music industry and abroad.
